Payment methods

Take cash, card, mobile money or another method — or split one sale across several.

When you select Charge, the Take payment window shows the amount due and asks how the customer is paying.

The four methods

MethodWhat you enterChange
CashAmount received — what the customer handed youShown as Change due
CardTransaction ID — the reference from the card terminalNone — the exact total is charged
Mobile moneyTransaction ID — the mobile-money referenceNone — the exact total is charged
OtherAmount receivedShown as Change due

Complete sale stays greyed out until the payment covers the total — or, for card and mobile money, until you've entered the transaction ID.

The transaction ID is how you match a card or mobile-money sale to your bank or mobile-money statement later. It's printed on the receipt as Txn ID.

Split a payment

For a customer paying part cash and part mobile money, for example:

In Take payment, select Split payment.

The first line starts as cash for the full total. Change its method and amount.

Select Add payment method to add another line. It starts with whatever is still to pay.

For card and mobile-money lines, enter the Transaction ID.

Watch the bottom line: Still to pay must reach zero. If the lines add up to more than the total, it shows Change due instead. Then select Complete sale.

To go back to one method, select Single payment.

How payments count at end of day

Only the cash part of a sale counts towards the cash expected in the drawer. Card, mobile money and other payments are listed separately in the end of day report.

Good to know

  • "Enter the transaction ID for the … payment" — a card or mobile-money line in a split payment has no reference.
  • "The payments don't cover the total due" — the split lines add up to less than the total.
  • The receipt lists each payment when a sale was split.
